The Resilient Force Project

An incubator for growth

“Resilience is not a fixed trait that some people are born with and others are not. The brain, body, and emotional system are constantly adapting to how we live, respond, recover, and connect. Small changes repeated consistently can gradually change the direction of a person’s life, and the growth of one person’s resilience often influences the people around them in ways they may never fully realize.”

Who We Are

The Resilient Force Project | Resilience Consulting,

Coaching and Counseling Across Hampton Roads

Our mission: The Resilient Force Project strengthens individuals and organizations by integrating resilience into everyday life. Through practical assessments, consultation, coaching, and education, we help build resilient individuals, leaders, teams, and organizations capable of sustaining performance, adapting to adversity, and achieving lasting growth.

The Resilient Force Project provides resilience consulting for military organizations, veterans, medical and mental health professionals, and first responders throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia. Founded by Dr. Michael Pettinelli, our work is grounded in six core pillars — physical care, emotional regulation, psychological wellness, value alignment, social connection and nature renewal— applied through individual coaching, leadership consulting, and organizational resilience assessments. We also provide counseling for individuals, teams, and organizations.  Grounded in the six pillars of health, physical resilience, psychological flexibility and emotional regulation, value alignment, social connection, and nature renewal.

We serve communities across the Peninsula, including Williamsburg, home to a strong small business and hospitality workforce; Newport News, anchored by Newport News Shipbuilding and a large defense and healthcare workforce; Hampton, home to Joint Base Langley-Eustis, NASA Langley, and a significant military and first responder population; and York County, home to Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and a growing base of military families and public service professionals.

Whether you're a leader navigating organizational burnout, a veteran in transition, a first responder managing occupational stress, or a healthcare professional facing compassion fatigue, The Resilient Force Project builds practical, research-backed resilience strategies tailored to the people and institutions that keep Hampton Roads running.

Who We Serve

Military Organizations

Military organizations operate in environments where readiness, adaptability, and performance are critical to mission success. We provide targeted resilience assessments that help leaders understand the current state of resilience within their organization, identify strengths and potential areas of concern, and uncover factors that may be impacting performance and well-being. We then work alongside leaders and personnel to implement practical strategies and resilience-building initiatives designed to strengthen individuals, teams, and organizational culture, ultimately enhancing mission readiness and long-term effectiveness.

Nonprofits

Nonprofit teams carry heavy missions with limited resources, often stretching staff and leadership past sustainable limits in service of the communities they support. The pressure to do more with less can lead to burnout, turnover, and a slow erosion of the passion that drives the work. We help nonprofit leaders and teams build resilience into their culture — strengthening staff well-being, supporting leadership through high-demand seasons, and creating sustainable practices that protect both the mission and the people carrying it out.

Veterans

The transition from military service to civilian life is one of the most significant changes many veterans will experience. While military service develops valuable skills and strengths, returning home and establishing a new sense of purpose, identity, and connection is not always easy. We partner with veteran organizations and communities to support veterans throughout this transition by helping them build resilience, navigate life's challenges, strengthen social connections, identify purpose and meaning, and leverage the strengths gained through military service to thrive in their next chapter.

Medical and Mental Health Professionals

Healthcare and mental health professionals spend their careers caring for others, often while neglecting their own well-being. The demands of supporting patients, managing complex cases, and working in high-pressure environments can contribute to burnout, compassion fatigue, and emotional exhaustion. We help professionals strengthen resilience, improve stress management, reconnect with purpose, and develop sustainable practices that support both personal well-being and professional effectiveness.

Private Industry

Businesses today operate in an environment of constant change — tight deadlines, shifting markets, and mounting pressure to perform can wear down even the strongest teams. When employees and leaders lack the tools to manage stress and sustain energy, it shows up as burnout, disengagement, and turnover that quietly erodes productivity. We help organizations build resilience into their culture — equipping leaders and teams with practical strategies to navigate high-pressure environments, strengthen workplace connection, and sustain performance without sacrificing well-being.

First Responders

First responders routinely face unpredictable situations, critical incidents, and high levels of occupational stress. The cumulative impact of these experiences can affect physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and job performance. We provide resilience-focused support that helps individuals and organizations build effective coping strategies, strengthen peer support and connection, enhance recovery from stress, and maintain long-term health, readiness, and performance.

Resilience Essentials

Physical Resilience

Resilience starts with how well the body is cared for and maintained over time.

Consistent sleep, proper nutrition, regular movement, and time outdoors help regulate stress and support steady energy.

When the body is neglected, everything else becomes harder to manage under pressure.

Emotional Regulation and Psychological Flexibility

Emotional regulation shapes how you respond when stress rises instead of being driven by it.

The ability to pause, recognize what you’re feeling, and respond with intention keeps situations from escalating and preserves your energy.

When emotions are managed effectively, you remain steady under pressure and make better decisions.

Psychological flexibility is built through how you interpret challenges and respond to setbacks.

A growth mindset keeps you open to learning; optimism helps you stay engaged when things get difficult, and grit allows you to continue showing up over time.

Together, these shape a mental approach that supports persistence, adaptability, and forward movement under pressure.

Value Alignment & Purpose

When we live outside our values, it affects us deeply. Chronic exhaustion, burnout, a sense that something isn’t right, and a gradual disconnection from ourselves and our lives are often the result. Having a clear sense of purpose, rooted in what genuinely matters to you, is one of the most powerful foundations for resilience and lasting wellbeing. At The Resilient Force Project, helping you identify your values and live toward them is central to everything we do.

Social Connections & Belonging

We are wired for connection — it is one of the most fundamental human needs, as essential as sleep or nutrition. Research consistently shows that the quality of our relationships is one of the strongest predictors of how well we cope with life, recover from difficulty, and sustain our wellbeing over time. When we feel genuinely seen, supported, and like we belong somewhere, resilience grows. At The Resilient Force Project, social connection is one of the cornerstones of our work.

Accountability and Self-Compassion
